Learning Profile

Adjusting is not always the easiest thing but I was able to adjust to the culture of college pretty easily. Therefore it really wasn’t that big of a change for me. I am still living in my hometown, even though I will be transferring later on in college it just has not happened at this moment. I am still around most of my friends, and I am still among my family. The main differences from high school life to college life is that you get to pick your schedule, make your own decisions, and your teachers are not always nagging at you for you to get your homework in on time. Another difference would have to be that when the professors tell you when your assignments are due they really do not remind you about it until maybe the day before it is due. It just depends on the professor.
There are many goals that I wish to achieve but I have set the standard ones. Therefore I have set my goals so that I will know what I need to accomplish in the two years that I am here at Butler. I have also figured out some of the things that I will need for the degree that I am working towards. I want to achieve an Associate in General Study’s degree for the career that I want to go into. I would like to pursue the career as an Anesthesiologist or as a Nurse Anesthetist. I plan on finishing here at Butler then transferring to Newman University to get my Bachelor’s degree after that I will therefore have to transfer once again so that I can get my Doctorate degree or my Professional degree. This is going to be a long process but I am willing to work toward my goal. Therefore what I want to go into as my career.
I have always done pretty well at managing my money, and dealing with my debts. For example: I have had my checking account since I was a sophomore in high school. Another example would have to be my cell phone for instance. Because I have had it since I was in the seventh grade, and for the last three and a half years I have been paying my own bill. This ties in with managing money and debt due to if you do not pay your bill then your service could get shut off. If this happens it then shows lack of management of your money and your debts. My boyfriend is a great help when it came to my credit card. He helped me out by taking it away from me so that I would not have access to it. This was so I would not get into a great amount of debt with it. I know that I do have good credit though due to when I applied to get a Dell Preferred account and they told me that I was the only 18 year old that has been accepted for it so far. By being accepted for the Dell Preferred account I was able to buy my own laptop without the help from my grandmother or mother.
I was not the greatest at prioritizing my time before college. For example: I would be late to school in the morning and I would not always have my homework done on time. But I would at least get it in by the end of the day. Granted it was still late. When I was a senior at El Dorado High School, I then started to prioritize my time a little better. For instance: I was the SADD (Students against Destructive Decisions) President and I was in charge of the Halloween Dance and the After-prom. I had to get everything ready and get all of the equipment set up and have all of the sponsors before I was able to even say that it was a go for. That was something that I was not really expecting on doing my senior year because at the beginning of the year I was not president. It got handed down to me because of something that occurred that then caused the president before me to resign. One of my main struggles was that of getting all of my yearbook layouts done when they were due. But in the end I was able to finish that and also take one of my layouts to the state contest. With all of the experience that I have been able to come into contact with have helped me learn to prioritize my time better. I have gotten better at prioritizing my time even though I still procrastinate occasionally.
By taking reading fundamentals and doing speed reader in the learning lab it has helped me with both my reading and comprehension skills. I have always had problems with my reading. It has always been a struggle for me in general. I believe that the more reading that I do in class and the more reading that I do by myself will help me out in the end.
This class and my other classes have helped me to open up more as an individual. I really do not like to talk in front of the class but when you asked me to talk about Darfur I was able to do it even though I really did not know that much about it. I think that this and my other classes have helped me to learn and become an active thinker. I have learned a great deal this semester out here at Butler. I feel that I am good at studying, that I am pretty good at cramming information in when it s needed. I can’t always remember all of the information but if I look at the section that it was in then I would then normally be able to recall that information then. For others this could be helpful, especially if they are not that good at studying or taking tests. I have always been a very good at listener when it people want to talk to me. This is really helpful when it comes to my friends and family. Especially when they might need me the most.
With cultivating my listening skills it helped me with this blog. If I would have not listened throughout the entire class I do not think that I would have been able to fulfill my expectations as a student for this course. This also helped me with my memory because by taking notes in my head meant that I had to remember what went on throughout the entire class.
A little bit about me is that I have always been the shy one out of all my friends. Well and I was always the shortest sense I am only 4’ ft and 11” inches tall. Since I was always shy it has always been hard for me to express my feelings to anyone unless it is someone whom I know really well. One thing that isn’t that great is that when I have to present something in class this is because of how shy I am or how shy I used to be. Since I was in the Miss Prairie Port Pageant here in El Dorado for the past two summers it helped me to figure out who I was and it also helped me to overcome some of my fears. One thing that I hate doing the most is giving speeches or talking in front of a class. In this class it wasn’t all that difficult for me to do that, and I really do not know why. It was kind of odd, because when I went to talk I was shy at first then it like all of a sudden went away. This class has been difficult for me due to the fact that it demands a great deal of my personal thoughts, feelings and information about my personal life. By having to do all of the blog assignments and rubrics with all the questions that you gave us, it has helped me to open up even more than before. This not only shows up here at the college by with my boyfriend and around his friends. He is happy that I am opening up around his friends. Also by not knowing who will be in my classes and if I will know them or if I won’t is a struggle for me due to the fact that I am a shy and quite person. I am happy with myself that I am able to express myself and open up to other students and faculty more than I have in my past. This is a giant hurdle for me to overcome but at least it is getting better as the days go on. I enjoyed a great deal of the material from this class. It is a great help. Probably not only for me but for other students also.
This course is not one that I would choose as an elective. But perhaps if I would have had the option and wanted to take this course I would have been more open minded and done better at getting the things done at a better rate of knowledge. I have developed and learned many things from this class. I do think that this is a great class and it is also very helpful, especially to a college freshman. It was not one that I would have taken even though the instructor was great. She is an amazing individual, who also has a great character. Now I see where her children get it from.

Butler Resources

I have had many friends in this situation when I was in high school, and it is still a situation with some of them. But there are many people who are willing to help you out if you just ask them. It may be a hard decision but you’ll have them throughout your entire life.
Jessica could go to an on or off campus health service. That is her option. Places where Jessica could go consist of: Planned Parenthood in Wichita, or to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. If she didn’t want to go to either one of those she could always go to the Health Center behind Central 6 Cinema. But there are also places that she could go to on campus like the West Residence Hall Rm. 162, at the El Dorado Campus or at the Andover Campus which is 715 E. 13th St, 5000 Bldg, Rm. 5112N. There are also teachers and advisors whom are willing to talk to if she wanted to go with that option.
An unplanned pregnancy is not always the easiest thing to deal with. It means you’ll have a kid for the rest of your life. But you have to deal with the situation. You may even have to step up and take it in your own hands if no one will be there for you.

Academic Plan

My academic plans are very important to me. I plan on going onto another college after getting my Associate in General Studies Degree here at Butler. My purpose for going to college was so I could get a good paying job later on in life. I want to be an Anesthesiologist, or a Nurse Anesthetist. To become an Anesthesiologist you have to get one of the following degrees: Masters degree, Doctorate degree or a Professional degree, but to become a Nurse Anesthetist you can get a 4 year degree which is a Bachelor’s degree or you can go on and get your Masters, Doctorate or Professional degree.
I am planning on transferring to Newman University to get my Bachelor’s degree after I get my Associate in General Studies degree here at Butler. I haven’t actually decided where I want to go after that there are only a few choices here in Kansas where I can go to get a Professional degree (Law, Medicine, etc…). The Universities that you can get a professional degree at here in Kansas are the following: Washburn University, Kansas University, or Kansas State University. As I said there weren’t many too choose from.
I believe that I chose the career that I want to pursue because of the many different types of experiences that I have had the opportunity to be around. I myself have had quite a few different surgeries. For instance my last one was during my sophomore year in high school. I had to have hernia surgery; this was due to having and umbilical hernia. Some other experiences that I have been able to experience were when my grandmother got bit by a rattlesnake out at her house in the country. They no longer give the anti-venom to the patient because it could kill them. My grandmother was the first patient here at Susan B. Allen that had been bitten by a rattle-snake. She was one out of like five that got bit that summer.

Academic Honesty

Academic honesty means that you will be loyal and not use plagiarism in your papers that you write for class or that you just write in general. Some of the reasons why students may resort to academic dishonesty are that maybe there paper may not be long enough for the required length. They procrastinated and did not do the paper until right before the class that it was for. They could have just needed information for a presentation but instead of doing the research and writing their own stuff they just pulled information off of the internet, or copied it straight from a book. This would then result in plagiarism; therefore it would not be their own words. Plagiarism is referred to the act of using someone’s words or works as your own without citing the original author. Penalties for plagiarism vary from college to college, but most institutions have strict guidelines for dealing with students who plagiarize. Some institutions force the student to withdraw from the institution. The student handbook here at butler has a list of information on page 15 in the handbook. Some ideas for maintaining academic integrity and avoiding dishonesty issues would be therefore not to use plagiarism in any way, and to make sure that everything that you write is in your own words and that none of the writing is straight from the internet or straight from a book or any information that you may have retrieved from any source. Make sure that when you writing anything that you make sure that if you use any information out of any research that you cite the source that you are using. This is very important.
The Butler handbook says the following:
Effective learning may involve differences of opinion and views between the student and faculty. Students are responsible, however, for learning the content of course of study outlined by the instructor, regardless of how the student feels privately. This attainment for content must be reached in an honest and forthright manner. Students who compromise the integrity of the academic process are subject to disciplinary action on the part of the college.
Students who have been accused of violating a standard of honesty may protect themselves with a series of appeal processes and are assured of due process and procedure. A student may appeal faculty and administration decisions concerning academic honesty. First, contact the Division Dean, who, if necessary, may inform the student of further steps in the procedure. These can include appeals to the Vice President for Student Services and College President if the student deems this necessary.
Students violating such standards must accept the consequences which may include a failing grade, suspension of dismissal from the class and/or the college.

Violations Include:
1. Cheating, in any form, whether in formal examinations or elsewhere.
2. Plagiarism, using the work of others as one’s own without assigning proper credit to the source.
3. Misrepresentation of any work done in the classroom or in preparation for a class.
4. Alteration of any documents pertaining to academic records.
5. Disruptive behavior in a course of study or abusiveness toward faculty or fellow students.

Community Service

The issue that troubles me the most would have to be Darfur, in western Sudan. There are many different things happening that have to deal with Darfur. Some of the things that are going on that have to deal with Darfur would have to be the following: GENOCIDE, some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and widespread murder, rape, abduction and forced displacement in camps. There has been more than two million civilians that have been forced out of their homes. The Janjaweed Militia are the ones who are mainly at cause for the Genocide in Darfur. They are also the ones that are forcing the civilians out of their homes.
Darfur has been going on for four years. The conditions just continue to deteriorate. Again there has been two million civilians forced to leave their homes, and as many as 400,000 civilians killed. The civilians that were forced to leave their homes now live in camps for internally displaced person also known as (IDPs) that is spread throughout Darfur. Others are in refugee camps in Chad and in Central African Republic.
I graduated from El Dorado High School, and there was a small group who brought this to our high school. They did many different things to raise the awareness of the Genocide in Darfur. Some of the things that they did consisted the following: had fund-raisers, sold shirts, bracelets, and they had a presentation that the presented to the entire high school. It touched some of the that were working on it a lot. One of the girls that worked on it attends Butler, another one was an exchange student from Germany, she graduated with my class but then she had to go back home to Germany to continue two more years of high school. With Darfur being raised as a concern at my high school made me want to find out more information about it even though I was not involved then.
I believe that everyone should help to end this Genocide. It is horrific, we’ve got to do something. It is so wrong what they are doing to the innocent men, women and children. If you are interested in Darfur at all please let me know. Maybe we might be able to get a group started here at Butler.

Time Management

Compared to a time management planning quiz I scored above the average for a planner. It also said that my planning system is working well and to keep up the good work. But to plan around what matters the most in my life.
When I don’t manage my time poorly unlike how I should manage my time I then tend to not do some of things that I should stay ahead in. It is really difficult for me to not procrastinate on my homework. I like to wait until the night before to do the assignments, when I could have done the assignments the day I got them. That is mainly where I do not manage my time the best.
In one certain situation it was when I went to Wichita between classes to go to the bank and to buy ink for my printer. This was a Wednesday. I had the following classes: english from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., then reading from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. I had an hour to go and get lunch and run any errands that I needed to run then, I had math from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. After my math class I went and did some stuff around town that I needed to do then when 4:00 came around Travis and I headed to Wichita. When we finally got to Wichita we stopped at the Credit Union, then at Office Max to buy the ink for my printer. Which did not even fit, when they told me that it would. But on our way back to town, we stopped at BG Boltons and ate. And eventually when we got to town which was almost 6:30 p.m. (which was also when my Psychology class started) I then had Travis just drop me off at the college so I wouldn’t be late for class. When my class was over then I called him and he then came and picked me up from class. I was glad that I had a good planning system that day or else I probably would not have made it back in time for my psych. class.
