Butler Resources

I have had many friends in this situation when I was in high school, and it is still a situation with some of them. But there are many people who are willing to help you out if you just ask them. It may be a hard decision but you’ll have them throughout your entire life.
Jessica could go to an on or off campus health service. That is her option. Places where Jessica could go consist of: Planned Parenthood in Wichita, or to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. If she didn’t want to go to either one of those she could always go to the Health Center behind Central 6 Cinema. But there are also places that she could go to on campus like the West Residence Hall Rm. 162, at the El Dorado Campus or at the Andover Campus which is 715 E. 13th St, 5000 Bldg, Rm. 5112N. There are also teachers and advisors whom are willing to talk to if she wanted to go with that option.
An unplanned pregnancy is not always the easiest thing to deal with. It means you’ll have a kid for the rest of your life. But you have to deal with the situation. You may even have to step up and take it in your own hands if no one will be there for you.

Academic Plan

My academic plans are very important to me. I plan on going onto another college after getting my Associate in General Studies Degree here at Butler. My purpose for going to college was so I could get a good paying job later on in life. I want to be an Anesthesiologist, or a Nurse Anesthetist. To become an Anesthesiologist you have to get one of the following degrees: Masters degree, Doctorate degree or a Professional degree, but to become a Nurse Anesthetist you can get a 4 year degree which is a Bachelor’s degree or you can go on and get your Masters, Doctorate or Professional degree.
I am planning on transferring to Newman University to get my Bachelor’s degree after I get my Associate in General Studies degree here at Butler. I haven’t actually decided where I want to go after that there are only a few choices here in Kansas where I can go to get a Professional degree (Law, Medicine, etc…). The Universities that you can get a professional degree at here in Kansas are the following: Washburn University, Kansas University, or Kansas State University. As I said there weren’t many too choose from.
I believe that I chose the career that I want to pursue because of the many different types of experiences that I have had the opportunity to be around. I myself have had quite a few different surgeries. For instance my last one was during my sophomore year in high school. I had to have hernia surgery; this was due to having and umbilical hernia. Some other experiences that I have been able to experience were when my grandmother got bit by a rattlesnake out at her house in the country. They no longer give the anti-venom to the patient because it could kill them. My grandmother was the first patient here at Susan B. Allen that had been bitten by a rattle-snake. She was one out of like five that got bit that summer.

Academic Honesty

Academic honesty means that you will be loyal and not use plagiarism in your papers that you write for class or that you just write in general. Some of the reasons why students may resort to academic dishonesty are that maybe there paper may not be long enough for the required length. They procrastinated and did not do the paper until right before the class that it was for. They could have just needed information for a presentation but instead of doing the research and writing their own stuff they just pulled information off of the internet, or copied it straight from a book. This would then result in plagiarism; therefore it would not be their own words. Plagiarism is referred to the act of using someone’s words or works as your own without citing the original author. Penalties for plagiarism vary from college to college, but most institutions have strict guidelines for dealing with students who plagiarize. Some institutions force the student to withdraw from the institution. The student handbook here at butler has a list of information on page 15 in the handbook. Some ideas for maintaining academic integrity and avoiding dishonesty issues would be therefore not to use plagiarism in any way, and to make sure that everything that you write is in your own words and that none of the writing is straight from the internet or straight from a book or any information that you may have retrieved from any source. Make sure that when you writing anything that you make sure that if you use any information out of any research that you cite the source that you are using. This is very important.
The Butler handbook says the following:
Effective learning may involve differences of opinion and views between the student and faculty. Students are responsible, however, for learning the content of course of study outlined by the instructor, regardless of how the student feels privately. This attainment for content must be reached in an honest and forthright manner. Students who compromise the integrity of the academic process are subject to disciplinary action on the part of the college.
Students who have been accused of violating a standard of honesty may protect themselves with a series of appeal processes and are assured of due process and procedure. A student may appeal faculty and administration decisions concerning academic honesty. First, contact the Division Dean, who, if necessary, may inform the student of further steps in the procedure. These can include appeals to the Vice President for Student Services and College President if the student deems this necessary.
Students violating such standards must accept the consequences which may include a failing grade, suspension of dismissal from the class and/or the college.

Violations Include:
1. Cheating, in any form, whether in formal examinations or elsewhere.
2. Plagiarism, using the work of others as one’s own without assigning proper credit to the source.
3. Misrepresentation of any work done in the classroom or in preparation for a class.
4. Alteration of any documents pertaining to academic records.
5. Disruptive behavior in a course of study or abusiveness toward faculty or fellow students.

Community Service

The issue that troubles me the most would have to be Darfur, in western Sudan. There are many different things happening that have to deal with Darfur. Some of the things that are going on that have to deal with Darfur would have to be the following: GENOCIDE, some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and widespread murder, rape, abduction and forced displacement in camps. There has been more than two million civilians that have been forced out of their homes. The Janjaweed Militia are the ones who are mainly at cause for the Genocide in Darfur. They are also the ones that are forcing the civilians out of their homes.
Darfur has been going on for four years. The conditions just continue to deteriorate. Again there has been two million civilians forced to leave their homes, and as many as 400,000 civilians killed. The civilians that were forced to leave their homes now live in camps for internally displaced person also known as (IDPs) that is spread throughout Darfur. Others are in refugee camps in Chad and in Central African Republic.
I graduated from El Dorado High School, and there was a small group who brought this to our high school. They did many different things to raise the awareness of the Genocide in Darfur. Some of the things that they did consisted the following: had fund-raisers, sold shirts, bracelets, and they had a presentation that the presented to the entire high school. It touched some of the that were working on it a lot. One of the girls that worked on it attends Butler, another one was an exchange student from Germany, she graduated with my class but then she had to go back home to Germany to continue two more years of high school. With Darfur being raised as a concern at my high school made me want to find out more information about it even though I was not involved then.
I believe that everyone should help to end this Genocide. It is horrific, we’ve got to do something. It is so wrong what they are doing to the innocent men, women and children. If you are interested in Darfur at all please let me know. Maybe we might be able to get a group started here at Butler.

Time Management

Compared to a time management planning quiz I scored above the average for a planner. It also said that my planning system is working well and to keep up the good work. But to plan around what matters the most in my life.
When I don’t manage my time poorly unlike how I should manage my time I then tend to not do some of things that I should stay ahead in. It is really difficult for me to not procrastinate on my homework. I like to wait until the night before to do the assignments, when I could have done the assignments the day I got them. That is mainly where I do not manage my time the best.
In one certain situation it was when I went to Wichita between classes to go to the bank and to buy ink for my printer. This was a Wednesday. I had the following classes: english from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., then reading from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. I had an hour to go and get lunch and run any errands that I needed to run then, I had math from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. After my math class I went and did some stuff around town that I needed to do then when 4:00 came around Travis and I headed to Wichita. When we finally got to Wichita we stopped at the Credit Union, then at Office Max to buy the ink for my printer. Which did not even fit, when they told me that it would. But on our way back to town, we stopped at BG Boltons and ate. And eventually when we got to town which was almost 6:30 p.m. (which was also when my Psychology class started) I then had Travis just drop me off at the college so I wouldn’t be late for class. When my class was over then I called him and he then came and picked me up from class. I was glad that I had a good planning system that day or else I probably would not have made it back in time for my psych. class.
